How Well Does Technorati Work?
After hearing so much about Technorati today, I technoratied my blog. Not only does it have the totally wrong name for my blog, but it says my last update was 167 days 4 hours and 45 minutes ago. That’s funny: to me, it seems like I just posted something here recently…
I checked some of the other Harvard blogs to see if Technorati might have something against Harvard’s server, but my colleagues don’t seem to have this problem. I think I’m going to check my preferences, then maybe drop them a line. I swear I allow crawlers and all that.
Not only does it not have accurate stats for me, but it doesn’t show that I link to some of my Harvard blog buddies. I suppose that’s because it hasn’t read my site in 167 days, 4 hours, and 45 minutes. (My gosh, have I really been blogging that long?)
Addendum 10/6: The staff at Technorati pointed out that the problem might be that my blog isn’t pinging Weblogs.com, that giant list of blogs that have been updated in the last three hours. I switched my preferences so that it is now. Hopefully, that’ll solve everything. (I knew I needed to check one more preference last night, but I couldn’t remember what it was…)
If you don’t know what Technorati is, go check it out. It shows who’s linked to who’s blog and you can follow the link universe all over the place. I think it’s really cool. Excellent tool for discovering blogs about particular topics. (And I’m not just saying that ’cause their helpful staff responded to me in an incredibly timely manner.)
Addendum 10/6 8:18 pm: I just checked my listing on Technorati again. My blog name is now correct and it says I last updated my blog about 5 hours ago. It looks like the problem has been resolved.

I was about to comment that Technorati seems to be capturing your weblog correctly, but then I noticed your update to this post. At any rate, it seems to be working now that you are pinging Weblogs.Com.

That’s bizarre. I just looked at my listing again and it still says I haven’t updated for 167 days 23 hours and 25 minutes…and yes, I pressed the reload button, too, and tried it in a different browser. Was it really that different, v? I’m still not listed as someone who links to you and I’ve done that once or twice. I don’t think it’s updating yet, but I’m going to keep an eye on it.
