Ambassador for the Profession
While I covered an event last night for the newspaper my office publishes, I met many people who had never heard of a news librarian. (Which I don’t think is all that odd: I didn’t know about news librarianship until just before I went to grad school when I got a job in a news library.) As I was interviewing people, they would often ask questions about what it’s like to work for a newspaper, what’s my beat, etc. When I told them I was the librarian, I got interesting responses. To some people, the idea of a news organization having a librarian is totally incongruous. I think I did a good job explaining to people that yes, there are news librarians and that we’re a valuable part of the organization. Maybe someone will be intrigued enough to explore the career.
