When It’s Better to Comment on Someone Else’s Blog Than Your Own
This post is dedicated to blog groupie Je’, who’s been exploring whether it’s better to comment on someone else’s blog than to post on your own.
Today, I ran into a prime example of when it’s better to post on someone else’s blog than write a blog post on my own and I thought of several other examples, too.
My blog, as you might tell from my list of departments on the side bar, deals with issues related to news librarianship, blogging, and a few miscellaneous topics. I read an interesting post on another blog about rape and wanted to respond. I felt like it would be way off topic for me to come back here to write what I wanted to say in this space. Because I try to keep my postings here related to my profession, I didn’t think it would be appropriate for me to type about it here. I try to keep politics and touchy and personal issues not related to my blog’s topics out of my postings as much as possible. I can think of other examples where it might be better for me to comment on someone else’s blog than to post something here, too, because of my blog’s theme.
I think if I had a personal blog with more random topics, I would have posted here instead of commenting on her blog.

Jessica,
Thought-provoking post. What if there were a way to split the difference? What I would like is a sidebar on my own weblog that showed me the most recent comments I have made on other weblogs with a link to the associated story. The sidebar could function as a miniblog in its own right, or have its own page. I call this a commentblog.
