“Why Am I a Librarian If I’m Not Wild About Books?”

someone asked me recently. Well, librarianship is a lot more than just books for me (and many other librarians). Although there may be some librarians out there who really have the attitude that libraries would be fine were it not for the library users, I am not one of those librarians. I enjoy connecting people with resources. I enjoy working on methods to retain and retrieve information–not just for my own uses, but for other people, too. Lately, I’ve been working on projects to put ephemeral information into some kind of fixed medium. That’s basically like emptying the knowledge out of my head and organizing it so that someone else can use the system. I like challenges. I like learning. To me, there’s no point in what I’m doing if it doesn’t involve people somehow. What’s the point of saving something if no one’s going to be able to use it or look at it?

And come on: you can’t blame me for wanting to play with technology. Mixing information with technology is a lot of fun. Add a few people and things get really interesting.
