The New Mayor’s Inaugural Address
Diversion: I attended the inaugural ceremony for the new mayor on Monday night. Tonight, several bloggers wanted to know why I didn’t write about it. A friend just happened to send me a notice about its presence online. So here it is on my blog by request.
Since the entire speech is online for you to read, I’m just going to mention some highlights. He prioritizes moving forward with plans to develop Assembly Square. He plans to cut back on city employee’s benefits to help stave off layoffs due to budget cuts and may explore getting prescription medications from Canada. He wants to bring in a 311 system for city phone calls. He’s looking into some changes in the police department. He would like to save some neighborhood schools.
Two people from the School Committee and two people from the Board of Alderman also gave “state of the city” addresses. The School Committee said many good things about Somerville’s schools, but also acknowledged the need for progress in some areas. The alderman outlined some goals for the board and the alderwoman encouraged people to get involved in the city.
