Home Computer Won’t Boot
Eeks! I can’t get my home computer to boot. I think it’s definitely a signal that I can’t procrastinate about buying a new machine any longer (darn it). I’m hoping to get it to boot, reinstall the OS (since I haven’t done that yet this month), and at least do another backup (since I haven’t done that yet this month, either), if nothing else. I’m not feeling optimistic about it, so if you don’t see any new blog posts from me for a little while, please try to understand.
(I’m at a place with computer access now–that’s how I’m blogging.)
Addendum 1/18: Things look grim for my home computer. I wasn’t able to get it to boot again today. It goes as far as the Mac chimes and stops. The green light saying it’s on doesn’t light up and the monitor’s light never turns green. I can hear the fan on the computer running and sometimes it’ll spin the CD in the drive (that’s the OS I was hoping to reinstall), but that’s as far as it’ll go. Any ideas? (No, I haven’t kicked it yet. I also haven’t tossed it out onto the snow.)

I had a Blue G3 die during transit. Similar to you it would power up, but it wouldn’t boot or drive the monitor and nothing more seemed to happen. It turned out that the CPU header block had come loose. After that was reseated firmly the machine booted and has worked normally since.
You might want to download the Apple maintenance manual for your model and go through the diagnostic procedures making sure everything is firmly seated.
Not sure if this will help, but it’s just a thought. Good luck.
