Contest to be a Librarian for a Day
Woman’s Day magazine is having a contest to be a librarian for a day. From their description, it sounds like they’re looking for public librarian wannabes: “If you’ve always wanted to field queries, read to kids during story hour and make book selections, tell us about it.”
To enter, simply write an essay of no more than 700 words about what the library means to you and why you’d like to be librarian for a day.
The official rules state that the American Library Association is a partner in the contest and the winning entries could appear on the ALA Web site. ALA has a blurb about the contest.
Approximate retail value of the prize: $25. That’s probably the cost of the T-shirt they give each winner.
Addendum 2/23: Blog Driver’s Waltz wonders if some popular, mainstream men’s magazines will run such a contest, too.

The last of the contest rules (#17) lists ALA and Woman’s Day as the official sponsors of the contest…My mom and I were talking about this contest recently; we were joking that I should enter. As a library assistant, I would not mind being a librarian for a day

I swear when I looked at the rules earlier today, the page ended after rule 7. Must have been a browser problem or something. I’ve edited the above text accordingly.
Several of us were remarking on a discussion list about how the ALA is a “secret sponsor” of the contest, especially since it’s so difficult to find anything about the contest on the ALA site.
A few of us special librarians were wondering if we could enter the contest, too, since we’d be working in a different kind of library.
