Alaska Considers Giving Parents Access to Children’s Library Records

This Associate Press article via the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner gives an excellent overview of the issues surrounding whether parents should have access to their minor children’s library records. Some people argue that since parents can be held liable for lost or overdue library materials, they should have the right to know what materials their children have. Others argue that access to their children’s library records violates children’s privacy. There are many legitimate situations when teenagers and children might borrow materials they don’t want their parents to know about, such as books on sexuality, drugs, or health.
