Librarian Finds and Returns Rare, Stolen Coin

Proof that some librarians do good deeds: A man gave an unidentified librarian a box of coins as collateral for a loan. After seeing an advertisement for an auction with a similar coin last year, the librarian realized one of the coins in the box was an extremely rare 1866 silver dollar minted without the “In God We Trust” inscription. The coin was stolen in a 1967 robbery and has been missing ever since. He gave the coin to representatives of a coin auction company, who returned it to the family from which it was stolen. The family will authenicate it, then donate it to the American Numismatic Association museum.

I like the reporter’s double-entendre: “[Representatives of the auction company] last week met the man at a motel in Augusta, Maine, where the coin was turned over in the motel bar.”

Addendum 3/8: The Dowbrigade posted a photo of the coin.
