Article about University Campuses and Internet Piracy
The March 11 issue of Black Issues in Higher Education discusses the state of Internet piracy on university campuses by focusing on initiatives by the administration to curb illegal downloading by students. It examines why some downloading services, like Napster, want to partner with universities.
A sidebar based on several surveys by the Pew Internet and American Life Project shows the demographics of students who download music. Subsequent polls indicate a drop in the number of interviewees who say they download music since the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) began filing lawsuits against copyright law violators.
Another sidebar addresses what actions related to downloading, storing, and sharing music are legal and illegal. (The way the column is worded, it makes it sound like someone who plays a CD, tape, or record while at least one other person is within hearing distance is breaking copyright law.)
The article without its sidebars is available on the subscribers-only portion of the Black Issues in Higher Education Web site.
