Addenda and Blog Posts
A blogger and I discussed how we handle addenda on our blogs because he wants a better way to do it. He often writes an addendum to a blog post as a comment on the initial post. In the system he uses, comments are handled as new blog posts and appear on the screen automatically, as well as being threaded below the appropriate blog post. His addenda go out in his feed and people reading the original post will probably find the comment.
I usually add addenda to the initial post directly with something labeling it as an addition, especially if it’s a post I’ve made recently. Sometimes I wrestle with whether it’s better to post something as it’s own unique item–especially if I want it to go out in my feed–instead of attaching it to another post. Trackback is one way my blog can link things together, but people don’t always know what that is, nor do they follow the link to get the box to pop up showing another blog post that links to that blog post. His system doesn’t have trackback (yet?).)
Maybe what we need is for the blog to handle addenda. Maybe there can be a link, like trackback, for addenda. The blog may not necessarily know the difference between trackback and an addendum, so the writer may still have to intervene–check a box or something–but it could be better than having to struggle with the decision each time and it could enable consistency among blogs regarding addenda.
