News Site Violates Copyright Law
A colleague sent some information about Liberty Post to a discussion group. The site reposts news articles from many different news sources presumably without proper permission. If you work for a content creator, you might want to dig through their archives looking for your material. It looks like they’re pulling content from quite a few sources from around the globe.
What a timely example: I was just talking to someone the other day about how news librarians help enforce the copyright of their publications.
Many news librarians are probably checking the site out for their content, then taking appropriate action, like getting the news organization to send a cease-and-desist letter. Depending on how big the violations are and whether the site administrators begin complying with copyright law, a news organization or several news organizations could take more severe legal action against the copyright violators.
It’s difficult to understand why some people violate copyright law in this manner. Some companies in the past have claimed that reposting news articles on their Web site falls under the copyright law’s education exemption. Others claim copyright does not apply on the Internet (which is very incorrect). Some people think they’ll never get caught or that copyright holders won’t take legal action against them.
