60th Anniversary of D-Day
Another off-topic post: If I had time to read right now, I would be rereading Stephen Ambrose’s D-Day. I read it a few years ago after reading his Citizen Soldiers when I discovered I have an interest in World War II. I didn’t really learn about the siginificance of D-Day until I read those books. Without that invasion of allied troops, the war would have dragged on much longer and it’s quite possible Adolf Hitler would have successfully conquered much more of Europe. Our world would be very different now. That’s why I’m taking some time to reflect on the 60th anniversary of the event.
I’m also thinking about those pages of Ernie Pyle dealing with the invasion. There’s nothing quite like reading a first-person account of it all, even if he was stuck on a boat and not going ashore with the troops in the beginning. A quote from D-Day +1 that stayed with me
Embedded journalists certainly make a contribution to our understanding of the war.
The Librarians’ Index to the Internet has some D-Day resources in their New This Week.
