More New Features on This Blog
I checked in with Thinking While Typing the paper doll chronicles for the first time in a long time over the weekend and got jealous of some of the cool features Vernica has on her blog, so I stuck them on mine.
There is now a search of this blog via Feedster. The results give permalinks, so it’s a much, much better search than Google’s search ’cause you should be able to go directly to a particular item instead of, say, landing in one of the departments and having to wade through many, many posts to find the one you’d like.
Feedster also claims to be able to generate a list of all of the blog posts, but it isn’t working for me. A different link has a list of my posts back to October 2003 (which I think is when I began syndicating this blog). Maybe someone with a different browser will have better luck. If it doesn’t seem to work at all, I’ll bug the people at Feedster about it.
There is a Manila macro for print-friendly pages, so there’s now a link in the navbar to facilitate text-only browsing or printing without getting the long list of stuff in my navbar. Accordingly, I improved the template related to that link. I posted instructions for using the macro on the Thursday Meetings blog.
Addendum 7/8: I have been in contact with Scott of Feedster about some of the search and table of contents problems. He said he will investigate them and try to work on a solution.

Hi Jessica,
Yep. It didn’t work — that’s my bad and I fixed it. We have constant problems with people trying to crawl all of Feedster so I (stupidly) made an error in a check for a robot and that’s what disabled it.
Sorry about that.
Best
Scott

And the feedster.net code is now fixed. Oops.

I’m glad that you found some useful things on my blog, j. Many of the “features” on my blog are experiments that I have not had time to either remove or fix. The two features that you decided to incorporate in your weblog are my favorites.
I was really happy when I saw that you posted instructions for using the macro on the Berkman Thursdays blog. Since I added the macro a few months ago, I have received several e-mails with questions about it. It is a useful macro that many people do not know about, it seems.
I like the Feedster search box a lot, although it seems not to have my early posts indexed. Supposedly, there is a Manila search box, but the Harvard weblogs system does not seem to be enabled for it.

Dude, that’s customer service! I hadn’t even e-mailed Scott yet. I guess e-mail is a little old-fashioned when there’s a feed available (ha ha ha).

v, thanks for the inspiration. I love the graphic at the top of your blog, but I don’t think I’m going to do my own graphic.
