Replacing Staples in the 432 ST Copier

If I was blogging officially for my job, another cool thing I could do is link to places on the Web that cover basic office equipment maintenance, like replacing the roll of staples in a copier.

One of the copiers ran out of staples. No one I asked knew where the replacement staples were and no one knew how to change the roll. Today, I found the replacement staples by accident. I couldn’t find the manual or figure out how to change the staples on my own, but I found this handy Web page explaining how to do it and the instructions worked.

If this blog was for my job, I could link to the page and say something like, “Here’s how to change the staples in that copier. Replacement staples are in the closet with other copier supplies on the third shelf from the top in white boxes. They are now labeled appropriately.” Perhaps everyone in the office would know where the replacement staples are and how to change the roll after reading the blog.

Knowledge management includes funky, informal, institutional knowledge, too.

(You laugh, but half the time when something mechanical malfunctions or runs out of something, people ask for my assistance with the task. I guess I look like a mechanical genius.)
