Fun with Technorati
Every now and then, I like to Technorati my blog to see who’s linking to me. I have a lot of fun with it sometimes and have learned it’s a good way to do blog discovery, as you’ll see in another post. If someone’s linking to me, perhaps our blogs have a common topic and my readers or I might be interested in knowing about that blog.
Sometimes I learn about blogs that have linked to me from a sidebar, like Newton’s Kumquat. When that happens, I often wonder who’s linking to me and what content they find so useful that they’ve decided to include a link to my blog on their blog. I usually spend a moment or two looking at the blog to decide whether it’s something of value to me.
Newton’s Kumquat caught my attention immediately because there’s sort of an old running joke among certain family members and friends about kumquats. Then it started to sound familiar, but I couldn’t place it. I read through a number of entries, went back to the first posts in the archive, and did some digging to figure out who it is. It’s someone I’ve met in person. He does a good job of concealing his identity, so I won’t say who it is here. Going through his site made me wonder how easily readers who don’t know me or this blog can figure out who I am without me clearly linking to my about page. Is it important for me to say who I am on my blog? Do readers care about that sort of thing? Yeah, my name’s all over the place and it’s pretty clear where I work, but do readers want more than that, especially readers who have never met me?
