Renamed a Department on this Blog

As part of this blog’s effort to be more inclusive of other kinds of feeds, the category that was RSS Feeds is now Feeds.

It appears, however, that the name change is not absolute because items categorized in the renamed department still bear the category’s former name. I guess I will have to fix that manually at some point.

I didn’t realize there was an easy way to rename departments on these Manila blogs. In the managing editor’s controls, there’s a place to create and delete departments. I went there first to see if there was some way to rename departments. Not seeing one, I decided that perhaps renaming categories in Manila isn’t as easy as renaming them on another system and set about reclassifying the posts by hand.

Sometimes a Manila bug takes me to the page listing deparments–a page I often forget about. I clicked on the name of the department, thinking the link would take me to the list of items so classified, but instead, I went to a screen where I could rename the department, add some descriptive text, specify a language, and choose a picture. I had forgotten about those options being there.

I renamed the category, then promptly panicked when the next screen showed a blank form–even the name of the category was missing. My first thought was that Manila ate the category. I hadn’t thought to pull up a screen of the department before working on it, which would have shown me which posts were in that department. Since that category is about seven months old and I frequently post about feeds, I imagine it has quite a few posts in it. The thought of digging through my blog looking for lost RSS feed posts did not appeal to me.

I went to the screen where the renamed category should have been just to see if there was anything there. I was stunned to find all of the RSS Feeds items listed on that screen under the new name Feeds. The name change worked. Maybe the bug just displays the wrong screen after a user hits submit or maybe it isn’t a bug and I just don’t understand why the system gives me a blank department form instead of something indicating the name change worked.
