A New Frassler Asks, “Why Blog?”
I hope Jennifer doesn’t mind me violating her silence this way. I read her entry exploring why anyone blogs and thought it was worth pointing to and quoting. She wonders about blogging in public, but comes to the realization that blogs can be a voice for different people with different areas of expertise.
“However, there is still the ego display of not only writing about a subject, but publishing it for an audience, real or imagined. If I want to keep a list of my favorite sites, I can simply bookmark them. Blogging says that you’re at least adding value to the list, that someone else might benefit from your input. And I just don’t know if I have any value to add.
Then I came to realize that there are subjects out there that I feel are not being addressed adequately.”
Another reason why some people blog is to funnel information to an audience. Many times when I read things, I think “Oh, [someone specific] should see this.” If I know that person reads one of my blogs and it’s appropriate, I’ll probably post it. I also blog things for my own knowledge management purposes.
Addendum 9/3: Josh Ain responds with some good thoughts.
