SLA’s New Member Drive
This is a shameful solicitation on behalf of the Special Libraries Association. Read with caution.
The Special Libraries Association is encouraging current members to recruit new members by offering them some minor incentives for refering new members. I found their e-mail to me about the promotion to be incredibly hillarious. The message was pretty much: “If you recruit a new member, it will benefit you!” The benefits are intriguing, but nothing substantial. I forwarded it to a friend of mine who recently began working in a special library who has been considering joining, whom I think would benefit greatly from membership, and whom I figured would find the wording of the e-mail humorous. If you’ve been considering joining the association and you would like to benefit a current member, contact a current association member.

Sounds like a pyramid scheme, doesn’t it? I think it ranks right up there with them handing us envelopes on our way out of the keynote speech at the conference.

Yes, it does. Or a cult.
But I can still see their point because there are a number of information professionals who could benefit from membership, but they don’t know about the association or just aren’t convinced they should join. I wouldn’t feel comfortable approaching someone about this in a serious manner if I didn’t already know s/he was thinking about joining anyway.
