Why I Haven’t Been Blogging
I couldn’t believe this. Today, I had a phone message from a sometimes-reader concerned because I haven’t been updating several of the blogs I contribute to. The reason is really quite simple and does not involve any vehicular accidents. (Sorry, you’ll have to run over that likeness of me again.) The modem on my laptop stopped functioning last week and I finally took the machine to a repair shop for more reasons than just the modem, since I would otherwise be occupied this past weekend and unable/unwilling to spend a lot of time blogging. The repairs are going to take much longer than I anticipated. I don’t know when I will have the machine in my possession again. I didn’t think I was that geeky or dependent on it, but I kinda feel like I can’t do anything without it: no hard-core blogging, no instant messaging, no IRC, no access to one of my e-mail accounts. I can’t send meeting minutes to a committee because I left them on the machine. I can’t work on upcoming presentations. I use it for part of my real job, too.
Those of you who have seen my laptop lately would have appreciated the look on the repairman’s face when he picked it up to admire the dents in the case. He said they might have to replace the case just for the sake of replacing it. I hope they don’t. I like to think the dents will discourage any thieves, though I know they could still harvest the parts, so maybe my thoughts are just silly. If I was going to steal a laptop, I’d much rather have a bright, shiny, dent-free one than one with a bad logic board, a faulty modem, and massive dents on three sides.
Besides, some of you have been reading hard and you deserve a holiday, too.
