News Librarian Professional Ethics

Friday’s Newslib discussion centered on ethics for news librarians and if news organizations have policies specifically for news researchers, if they fall under guidelines for journalists, or if news researchers don’t have to follow a code of professional ethics.

The Forum in North Dakota has a relatively new ethics policy that covers news researchers. (The section on weblogs indicates employees can have them, provided they ” … take the utmost care to ensure their postings do not create a conflict of interest with their coverage beats and the newspaper’s efforts to portray an unbiased, accurate account of the news.”)

Someone else shared a link to the Hearst Newspapers code. The American Society for Newspaper Editors’ Web site has more codes of ethics.
