Rankings and Most Popular Posts

A few of the Harvard bloggers are getting anxious without the rankings page. I was checking out some stats the other day and noticed something intriguing. The Dowbrigade is worried about me sneaking up on his blog while no one’s watching, but he has more than five times the hits on some of his popular posts than what are on mine. When I looked at sj’s, I had to wonder why his blog wasn’t up on the rankings page with ours. He has more than twice the hits on his popular posts as I have on mine. Wendy and Nathan are inbetween.

I can think of reasons why the numbers are so different. sj has fewer posts than the Dowbrigade and the scratchpad, so it makes sense that people hitting his blog would have a higher chance of hitting the same posts. I estimate I have around 900 posts, which is probably more than The Dowbrigade. People hitting my content have higher chances of hitting different posts. But that won’t account for the large difference in our numbers. If popular bloggers link to the same posts on The Dowbrigade, it makes sense that a few of them would have very high traffic numbers, but that may not account for all of the posts on his list. He’s much more likely to get pointers from the big bloggers than I am.
