: Tony Cahn is presenting
: he’s talking about the problem I was trying to solve
: we needed another cable to connect his laptop to the projector
: and we/he didn’t have the right connection
: er, adapter
: Tony’s about to play some podcasts he found at random
: I’ll try to listen
: but can’t guarantee transcriptions of the sound
: = )
comment: why not ![]()
: they might contain offensive topics/language
: I may not be able to type that quickly
: my fingers don’t know how to spell some of those words ; )
: it’s really, really loud
: Adam Curry
: Radio Brothers’ Podcast
: independent Christian music
: Dave’s Usher
: Evil Genius Chronicles
: Let’s go California

: I missed one
: not real music
comment: evil genius chronicles
: something to do with a band and drugs
: dancing for mental health
: kernel panic who computer crashed
: (sounds like me)
: “source code problem can you come back in 15 minutes”
comment: recent daily source code
comment: adam spilling tea
: something about a mouse pad
: yeah, that’s what it is
: lol
: you listening in?
comment: this is from DSC about two days ago
: I love radio .org
: from Berlin, Germany
comment: this was pretty hilarious
: or I should say aus Berlin, Deutschland

: “I have topics. Frontline on PBS last night. how Wal-Mart is …”
: something about John Kerry
: deep, talk radio kind of voice
: “I can see! I can see!”
: big public speaking voice
: he’s doing soundbites, not necessarily named
: “It was shitty before Wal-Mart came. It’s shitty after Wal-Mart came.”
: something about a dark period in American history
: “If I gave you $5, would you let me be your first commercial person?”
: “I’ll always tell you about when we’re reviewing”
: “rating system for podcast”
: I just missed another forgot it

: something else about John Kerry
: “Podcasting
: the next big thing” in the London Times

: “Thanks for subscribing, y’all”
: dailysourcecode.org
comment: inkernet
![]()
: er, excuse me dailysourcecode.com
: sorry having hearing problems, too ; )
: Tony was going to jump right in, but someone stopped him to get an explanation of podcasting
: Tony’s explaining how there are sound files on the net already
: how this is different is that people are excited about the idea
: of having a regular flow
: of programs or sound files
: that are easy for people to receive
: and easy for people to make because of technological advances
: Ori’s explaining there are 3 separate layers to it
: one layer is content creators
: the people downloading files is the second layer
: using feeds, doing time shifting, is the third layer
: automatic downloading is in that layer, too
: Tony says there’s a fourth layer
: an awareness on the part of the public that this is a neat idea
: “What if I do this on my own?”
: what’s happened in the last four months is that it went from 0 podcasts to 700 podcasts
comment: there are many programs that capture audio
: some have 70,000 listeners
: but numbers are often exaggerated
: Dave Winer is saying Adam [Curry] got a lot of it going
: mentioned a project he (Dave) did with Christopher Lydon, formerly of the radio show The Connection, while they were at the Berkman Center as fellows
: (I think Chris is still a fellow, Dave is not)
: Dave says the flexibility of podcasting is one powerful aspect of it
: it doesn’t necessarily make sense when you’re at your computer
: most aren’t just background noise
: Charlie Nesson was doing something akin to podcasting, but without the distribution system
: the phenomenon, according to Dave, is the growth
: podcasting has been around, like blogging, but people didn’t call it podcasting “back then”
: can we use podcasting to get around govt controlled media?
Ori: ipodder.org
: thanks
Ori: http
://www.ipodder.org/
: Dave plugged the next international session about tools
: Ori gave a good analogy between syndicating blogs and syndicating radio shows
: I missed the woman’s initial question
: but now we’re sort of talking about tools
: q: will we come to a point soon where
: a podcaster will say to a radio host
: “You’re not a real podcaster”
: what do you think of that?
Ori: Jay Rosen quote
: “One day bloggers will tell journalists
: you’re not a real blogger.”
: Tony’s going to answer
: yeah, exactly based on what Jay said on Friday
: Dave
: people believe podcasting can be as big as blogging
: playing music can be a challenge because of rights
: Ori reiterated a point from an earlier international session
: that many people aren’t literate
: by doing work via sound, people might be able to reach illerate people
: The Dowbrigade emphasizes that time shifting is important
: he teaches English to people who don’t speak it as a native language
: and sees podcasting as a tool to reach people who want to learn
: follow his classes
: but can’t go to his classes
: maybe he can reach someone in another timezone who can listen while they drive or whatever
: a woman raises concerns about a Republican Congress cutting funding to NPR
: when there’s no more funding, she’ll tune into podcasting more for content
: a guy in the other corner is talking about how “as a radio announcer”
: he sees podcasting as an iteration of the same thing
: I guess he works for WGBH Radio in Boston
: Bob somebody
: (I don’t listen to WGBH)
comment: he’s someone who is slightly above Tony Kahn
comment: who got, as tony said, wgbh to podcast
: something about embedding links in audio files
: giving out URLs to feeds
: Tony
: people have evolved lots of different ways to use podcasting
: with podcasting, there’s limited information in the feed
: with blog feeds, they’re easier to find and go back to the original source
Ori: http
://audio.weblogs.com
: Dave’s talking about getting flamed
comment: actually you can skim a podcast
comment: it’s called skipping
comment: use your ipod scroll wheel
![]()
: Dave was saying that with sound, people can tell how someone means something better than when someone just types words
: someone in the audience
: brought up how
: with podcasting
: someone doesn’t have to fill and hour
: er, an hour
: or a set time for a show
: he said he’d much rather listen to seven minutes of good content
: than twenty minutes of callers saying nothing
: q: from Charlie Nesson, law prof, Berkman founder
: what about ads on iPods?
: with public radio or many stations
: everyone would skip the pledge drives
: and ads
: how does that impact revenue?
: Bob from WGBH said he couldn’t speak for the industry
: but public radio sells content to audible.com
: and something else
: (I’m just not as good at transcriptions as sj)
: Christopher Lydon is in the room
: Tony just asked him for his take on things
: he’s talking about the equipment he uses
: Dave’s talking about how much he admires Chris and his work
: and how he adopted Chris’ methods to do his own radio stuff
: he’s emphasizing how it might be important to do podcasting every day
: many people can join a podcast
: Tony just mentioned that a number of podcasters think people are listening when they’re doing their show
: even if they’re all alone
Josh Ain, who’s entered the Feedster developer’s conference, talked me into going to the podcasting talk over lunch–just in case I get an iPod soon.
Tony Cahn of WBUR is presenting.
