VBB: Tools

Tools is focusing on different tools people use. Anyone can show off what they use in 2.5 minutes or fewer.

I’m trying to blog this live since sj’s doing a transcription. Refresh early and often.

  • del.icio.us
  • Frassle
  • Civilities will appear as a Drupal module this spring.
  • Someone’s talking about different translation tools, like Babel Fish.
  • Wikipedia, with 100 languages Someone pulled sj out of transcribing to talk about Wikipedia
  • an identity service
  • Public Radio Exchange
  • An Arabic blogging tool, Janice Abrahams and David Carter of iupload, which is not public and very buggy (they admit that), so I’m going to close my eyes, in case it’ll bring them better luck. They’re hoping to get more Iraqi bloggers. Their next project might be working with Klingon. There might be more Arabic blogging tools; many are almost ready to go on the market.

Now we’re doing open brainstorming on tools we’d like to see

  • The Dowbrigade wants better categories with more structure and easier ways to append them to blog posts.

  • Hoder: Feeds are powerful because we can use them to get around so many things via a peer-to-peer network. We need to make sure it’s the original feed someone’s produced, though. He wants to see awards for hosts, not just awards for weblogs.
  • Joi Ito reminds us to use Creative Commons’ licenses and to state that on our blogs.
  • Someone observed that pages in Wikipedia seem to be in different languages, but the content isn’t the same. sj pointed out that they aren’t meant to be exact translations.

  • Low tech phone cards for people in Iraq to convert those cards into money. Something about paying for things on PayPal and how people in other countries don’t have access to PayPal.
  • How to tip bloggers in Ghana? I can’t really hear the answer. Something about getting money to people in other countries via phone cards that can be refilled via the Web.
  • How do we get attention to bloggers who deserve it, but don’t get it? Is it possible to match big bloggers with hot, emerging bloggers in the developing world? What about mentoring?
  • Jeff Jarvis What about a news service? Could be easy, yet important, to gather blog voices together like a news service.
  • Podcasting, audio blogging will be important
  • Photo blogs & quick uploads
  • Top blog posts from geographical regions could be a way to reach new readers, share posts.
  • better ways to find out who’s quoting a blogger and tracking those posts
  • Source Board is a way for people working on projects to get together and network. The URL the guy gave in the session doesn’t work.
  • air conditioning
