Google and Harvard Libraries Announce Digitization Project

John Battelle writes about an effort of Google and a number of large libraries, including some of Harvard’s, to digitize materials and provide access to them. Information might be available in several places on Harvard’s network and perhaps Google in the next few days.

When I received the e-mail Battelle shares just before I left work this evening, I realized posting the information would be a conflict of interest until it’s available via Harvard. I’m following John Battelle’s embargo rules here. The story’s out in the blogosphere now, so I feel like it’s fair game for me to write about it.

Addenda: The Harvard Homepage has a blip up pointing to the Harvard University Gazette article about this project.

Tuesday and Wednesday’s Harvard in the News listed a number of articles from major news outlets about this venture.

The Chronicle of Higher Education has a free article about it.

Gary Price writes about it on Search Engine Watch.

12/15: I love Jenny’s take on this: Hey, Your Library’s Books Are in My Google. No, Your Google Is in My Library Books.

I’m sure I’m dating myself a bit there, but if you don’t understand it, come to my office door to look for the Get Fuzzy cartoon about a dog bone and peanut butter.

John Palfrey shares some thoughts and the text of the announcement, too.

At the copyright program today, someone asked me where the full-text of the announcement on Harvard’s Web site is. Carl H. Pforzheimer University Professor and Director of the University Library Sidney Verba’s letter, the release, and an FAQ are on the Harvard University Library Web site. I thought the Harvard Libraries Web site would have it in an obvious place, but I don’t see it there. Google has an announcement.
