Managing the Managers, Directing the Directors
A theme of recent conversations I’ve had with people who aren’t as happy with their jobs as they could be is disatisfaction with management styles.
Is it fair for employees to initiate a conversation with the management about what kinds of things they might need or want from their managers in order to do a good job or improve the work environment?
BusinessWeek’s current issue has many articles about managers and managing. I was hoping they would have more tips about what makes managers great or terrible. It seems the ones they’ve selected have either done really good things for their companies or really messed up. Most of the items I looked at don’t mention interpersonal relationships or managing people. The Six Ps of PepsiCo’s Chief has a few hints.
