Master’s Degree = Higher Salary?

I got to hang out with a recent library school grad and a soon-to-be graduate who were in town for ALA. I love networking with students. We got into a discussion about whether it’s fair to ask for more money because we have master’s degrees.

I definitely think it is. It’s experience, training, that sort of thing.

How would it be unfair to ask for more money with a degree? Unfair for whom? The employer? Other, undegreed candidates? I don’t think I’m getting this. You pay good money for an MLS; you should get money for it. I think 5 people a year get an MLS to fulfill intellectual curiosity, if that. It’s a union card. I wish it were more. But the reality is that you get an MLS because you like or love libraryland enough to accept the low wages an MLS gets, instead of living on the penurious wages of clerks.
