Please Don’t Assume Anything about What I Write, Include on this Weblog
A comment from a reader questioned why I would post something without adding any of my own thoughts to it and whether that meant I agreed with what I pointed to. I think his question deserves an explanation bigger than just my response in the comments of that post since it explains a smidge about the contents of this weblog and many of you might be wondering the same thing.
I point to a lot of things without comment. That doesn’t necessarily mean I agree with them or anything. It just means I didn’t type anything about it.
Often, I don’t have much time to blog or really read things in my aggregator. I point to a lot of things as reminders to myself to go back to read them later (blogs as knowledge management tools and all that, you know). Frequently, I’ll notice something, skim the first few lines, realize a few of my readers might be interested in it, and point to it without adding anything.
I point to things all the time I don’t necessarily agree with. If we don’t read/listen to the other side, how can we learn, grow?
I encourage the scratchpad’s readers not to assume anything about what I’m including or about my own comments or thoughts on the issues.
Many times, I try to present things with a neutral viewpoint. I see part of my role with this weblog as saying “Hey, look at this!” and just pointing things out as FYIs, not to criticize, comment on, or evaluate many of the things I look at.
