News Holes & Wikinews
I stumbled across an article about how someone thinks the U.S. military stifles news Iraqis need in favor of news about the military camapaigns. I was planning to point to the article, but I can’t find it now. Just reading the headline reminded me about the value of weblogs in areas like Iraq where getting news about things other than what interests the mainstream media is very difficult, if not impossible. Getting people in these areas blogging is one way to get news out. Finding someone who can contribute to Wikinews in these areas might accomplish the same goals.

A native of a middle eastern country working on Wikinews is the kind of thing I dream of (well, not literally…), but at least for the rest of the world, there’s a real lack of news on issues from the area _other_ than what the U.S. military is doing today.
