NY Times now owns About.com

Is this an attempt to compete with Wikimedia, which provides news and a hodgepodge of information from a variety of contributors?

According to the press release linked above, the company thinks About.com adds to their diversity. They see the sites as another way to deliver news and information.

Addendum 3/14: Angela Beesley compiles a few sources to address my question which was intended with a bit of sarcasm that vanished when the post hit the Web. The answer is basically no. The services are too different to be direct competitors.
