Wikipedia a Slanted Source without Peer Review?
It’s kinda funny to think that this Wayne State newspaper article makes a point of saying Wikipedia could be a slanted source without mentioning Wikipedia’s policy about taking a neutral viewpoint.
The author seems to think peer review prevents articles from being slanted. I don’t agree with that. If everyone reviewing the article has a similar agenda or comes from the same perspective, items can end up slanted. There are probably times when all of the peers would like articles to be slanted a certain way, too.
Think about biases in the news media, for example. Many news sources claim to be neutral, but often aren’t–whether they aren’t intentionally or accidentally is another debate for another time. Many stories and articles go through an editorial process where several people vet them. That’s not exactly scholarly peer review, but it’s similar. Does that process always get all of the bias out?
Why am I rambling on about this anyway? I am most definitely not a brilliant librarian.
