Marketing the Special Librarian
Christina Pikas shares some strategies special librarians can use to market themselves.
One of the ways I “put myself in the way” and try to connect to my coworkers is by keeping candy in my office. Very minor and rather silly, I know, but it works in this environment.
One of the funky aspsects of my nontraditional job is that I don’t work directly with most of the people in the office. I do a lot of invisible tasks, like maintaining databases, that support some of the functions of the office, but it seems that most of the clients I work with directly are outside of this office. How can I initiate interactions in this fast-paced environment, especially when most days we don’t have time to breathe, let alone exchange jokes at the bubbler? Quite a few of my coworkers will dart in for a piece of candy and a brief exchange of words.
