A Brief Lesson on Letterboxing

Avi's stamp: a braidJonathan's stamp: musical notesis what I received tonight when talking to Avi. He and his son, Jonathan, began the hobby about a year ago. It involves getting some clues from a Web site to a box’ location and finding a box. Inside the box is usually a journal and a stamp. You carry your own notebook and stamp with you. You stamp your journal with its stamp and stamp its notebook with your stamp. Sometimes a letterbox has something in it called a hitchiker, which you take with you to the next letterbox you find.

I’d heard about it through some radio shows and think it’s a rather interesting hobby because it combines travel, puzzling, searching, and sometimes nature and hiking, as well as stamping. Avi told me about some of the boxes they’ve found, including some not too far away. There might even be some near my office.

I suggested that Avi hide a letterbox near where he’s playing vibes in the band Apple Crisp (.pdf) at Faneuil Hall on Sunday, May 1, at 10:30 am.

Addendum 5/2: I heard a rumor that Apple Crisp was accepted into the group of performers for the Faneuil Hall area. Look for them playing out there this summer. Congrats!
