My Orkut profile now has a picture.

Tuesday, April 26th, 2005

*j imagines lots of readers flocking to Orkut to view the picture.
I’ve had a stack of photos for scanning for a while. When I went through them looking for another photo, I paused at one and asked, “Why wouldn’t this work?” I couldn’t come up with a good answer, so there it is. I think [...]

Notes from a Talk by Michael Gorman

Tuesday, April 26th, 2005

A few scratchpad readers dropped me some lines about their impression of a talk American Library Association president Michael Gorman gave at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s School of Library and Information Studies. I linked to Amanda Robertson’s comments because she summarizes what people told me about the event. The students, who have strong interests in [...]

Berkman Acknowledges Wales is an Incoming Fellow

Monday, April 25th, 2005

Finally! The confirmation we’ve been waiting for! In their note about Jimmy Wales’ appearance at the Berkman Center for Internet & Society Tuesday, April 26, the Berkman Center describes him as an incoming fellow.
Of course, they probably acknowledged his rumored position weeks ago, but my aggregator ate it.
By the way, sj has a transcript of [...]

Yenching, Knitting, IRC, & Wikipedia

Monday, April 25th, 2005

Yes, they all blend together. Not only might there be entries in Wikipedia about knitting, IRC (here: Internet Relay Chat), and Yenching, but that pretty much sums up Tuesday evening.

Dinner at Yenching before Jimmy Wales’ talk about Wikipedia at 8:30 p in 101 Pound Hall at Harvard Law School

Getting the Social Networking Tools

Sunday, April 24th, 2005

I haven’t done anything with my Orkut account in forever. I was a little surprised to find that it’s still there. Probably a good thing since I founded the News Librarianship community.
I’ve been meeting a lot of people in various social situations lately. Just for fun, I decided to look one of them up. Yep, [...]

j blog or j weblog?

Saturday, April 23rd, 2005

Well, a link to this blog is on Google’s first page for j blog, but it’s disguised via someone else’s weblog. A direct link here is on page 5, slipping from page 4 a few months ago.
j weblog returns slightly different results. The scratchpad first shows up on page 3 hidden in another weblog. A [...]

Friday, April 22nd, 2005

Hiawatha Bray of The Boston Globe and the Associated Press’ Ken Maguire update us about the vetting of Michelle Delio’s work in several publications, including MIT’s Technology Review. Her work came under criticism after Technology Review staff discovered a source she used had misrepresented himself to her. Bray tells us what other publications for which [...]

Calendar of Events for Librarians

Friday, April 22nd, 2005

I’m sure all the other librarians in the Boston area already know that Simmons College’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science has a terrific calendar of events of interest to their students, but I’m going to point to it anyway.

I am now a member of the SLA President’s Club

Friday, April 22nd, 2005

*j puffs out chest
I received a nice letter from Special Libraries Assocication President Ethel Salonen, a pen, and an enamel pin as thanks for helping SLA with its recent membership drive. My efforts earned me a spot in the elite SLA President’s Club. But I really need to thank whomever put my name down on [...]

BusinessWeek on How Blogs Change Business, Launches Weblog

Friday, April 22nd, 2005

"Go ahead and bellyache about blogs. But you cannot afford to close your eyes to them, because they’re simply the most explosive outbreak in the information world since the Internet itself. And they’re going to shake up just about every business — including yours. It doesn’t matter whether you’re shipping paper clips, pork bellies, or [...]
