I could not agree more about the need for LIS schools to consider making practical experience a requirement for graduation from their MLS programs. As part of my MLS program I did two practica, one at an academic library and one at a special library. I was hired during the final term of my MLS by the special library, and the primary reason for my hiring was the performance I was able to demonstrate through my practical experience.
I also think that schools should consider making professional association participation a criterion for awarding the degree. My contacts through my local SLA chapter were invaluable in securing the special library practicum, and I now interact with a wider community of library and information professionals that includes students, new librarians, and experienced professionals. Students should take advantage of these opportunities while in school, and administrators should encourage such involvement.

I agree completely with you, Scott, about the value of practical experience.
The program I attended had many opportunities for practical learning, whether it was a class project or the required practicum. I didn’t have to write a thesis. The practical experience certainly strengthened my resume and gave me valuable learning experiences–perhaps more valuable than sitting in some of the required classses. I’m a very hands-on learner anyway. I know, for me, writing a required thesis wouldn’t have been more beneficial than doing a practicum. I wrote a thesis for my undergraduate degree. I can’t see how doing that again would have added to my value as a librarian.
