Adventures with Skype
Because of injured wrists, I’ve been looking for alternatives to typing and holding a telephone. This week, I’ve been using Skype, a piece of software that does voice over IP, quite a bit and have been even more impressed with it.
To make an injured friend laugh, I rang him via Skype so he could hear me singing along with the radio.
We didn’t have a microphone for the blog meeting’s audio cast, so I had people dial in to my Skype account with a conference call. It worked wonderfully!
After the meeting, one of the Skype participants wanted to talk to someone in the room, so the two of them started chatting on IRC (Internet Relay Chat). My brain kicked in after about five minutes and I told them they could just /talk/ over Skype since he was still connected to my machine. Instead of hearing each other type, they could listen to their voices. The wonders of technology! The range on the mic on my computer is so good, the woman didn’t even have to be near my computer for him to hear her.
