The utility of tags in LJ
Addendum 7/8: more on LiveJournal tags
It’s a lot like the idea behind Frassle’s categories and related items and, of course, it’s just metadata. The idea that a community of users comes up with a series of keywords for certain things, then links their post together with those keywords, is actually quite powerful and facilitates searching. Is the trend because blogging software is moving away from categories/departments integrated into a system? Or is it arising because people are either using platforms not offering those features or who feel that the feature is inadequate? I’ve thought about adding tags to some of these entries that I’d like to stick in multiple categories.
