Words I’ve Taught the VR Software Today

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2005

I’m considering posting a list of words I add to the voice recognition software as a regular feature to my weblog just for fun. I’m amazed at what I have to teach it because I didn’t think my vocabulary was so specialized, but the words I commonly use, especially when I blog, it doesn’t know.

Blogebrity

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2005

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry looking at this Web site about bloggers. It seems to do for bloggers what gossip magazines do for celebrities. It even has lists for the A-, B-, and C-list bloggers. I am happy to report my absence from all of them.
Thanks, KP, for sharing. You […]

Baby Finch!

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2005

Yep, it’s that time of year again.
This baby house finch, the first I’ve seen this season, belongs to the male with brown patches on his head and his mate. I think I’ve heard it on the balcony before, but today I’m definitely looking at it. It still has those feathers sticking out of the sides […]

This sounds like my Mac’s problem

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2005

Gosh, darn it, maybe I do need an LJ identity just so I can tell this person my laptop did this to me just before the blog course I taught a few weeks ago and what worked to solve the problem.
Some friends restored it by hooking it up via a firewire cable to another machine […]

The VR software wants to contradance.

Tuesday, June 21st, 2005

I say “Hey” and it prints 8.
Wait … I think I heard a chuckle …
Learning how to use the voice recognition software, ViaVoice, is quite a challenge. I’m getting better at it, but it’s still slow going. Of course, I had to teach it a whole bunch of geeky words like blog, podcast, […]

Blogger Survey

Tuesday, June 21st, 2005

Cameron Marlow, who’s working on a dissertation at MIT, is gathering data about bloggers. His survey is online. Unless you’re one of his 5,000 A-list bloggers, you have to request a key in order to take the survey.
I finished in fourteen minutes after waiting less than a minute to get a key. It’s a quick […]

Meeting Bloggers at Conferences

Tuesday, June 21st, 2005

Christina has a great post about meeting bloggers face-to-face at conferences. I ditto what she says.
Christina, by the way, stepped into the blogging course at SLA briefly and was able to answer some questions.
She is also rumored to have the cover article in the July/August Online, which wasn’t available electronically when I looked earlier […]

The utility of tags in LJ

Addendum 7/8: more on LiveJournal tags
It’s a lot like the idea behind Frassle’s categories and related items and, of course, it’s just metadata. The idea that a community of users comes up with a series of keywords for certain things, then links their post together with those keywords, is actually quite powerful and facilitates […]

Blogger Rights

A colleague in Winthrop sent me the URL for this list of rights of bloggers by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). Thanks!

Bizarro! Restoring a Vanished Post

Monday, June 20th, 2005

I wonder what happened here: if my weblog ate a post and it doesn’t recognize that in the calendar or if something’s funky with the blog post so that it doesn’t appear properly. The calendar indicated there was a post on 11/11/2003, but when I tried to view it initially, I saw the blog heading, […]
