Computer Backups

I spent most of my July 4th holiday burning files from my laptop to CDs. (Those folks who have been nagging me to backup my machine just cheered loudly.) That way, if it decides to go bonkers again, I’ll feel more independent.

I figure I can do a massive backup like this maybe once or twice a year, then be more active about backing up files and programs I use more frequently. My personal e-mail client recently ate a week’s worth of mail. Granted, that wasn’t a whole lot of stuff, but it did include a few important notes I wasn’t ready to part with yet. That encouraged me to get serious about backing things up on a more regular basis.

It’s amazing how much /junk/ I have on this machine. As I’m going through the folders, I keep thinking “Why did I keep this?” “I don’t need to back this up.” “How come I have two folders for … ?” I freed up about 8 gigs of space just putting things away, eliminating duplicate files, and dumping stuff I don’t really need. I wish cleaning my paper files was this easy!

Now to figure out where to keep the CDs …

Congratulations! External hard drives also have their uses – much faster than CD burning and it’s easy enough to use one drive – say with both USB and firewire interfaces – to back up several computers.
