Job Search Tips
rte shares this list of job search tips from Information Wants to be Free.
I’ve been spending a lot of time lately helping one of my mentees with her job search. I told her I have a special post for her today and it’s something I wish we would have seen months ago. She asked me what I thought about paying out of pocket to go to an interview. I don’t remember what I told her*, but Meredith suggests in number 4 that if an organization isn’t willing to invest in job candidates, they may not invest much in their employees. She also suggests getting a mentor (6). My Dad is mine when it comes to questions about jobs, employment, and negotiations. As someone who’s been on the market and has hiring experience, his knowledge is definitely worth tapping.
I’ve noticed more job ads recently, so I imagine more people are shifting around jobwise. A good place to find news library positions (or even to get a good idea about what news librarians do) is on the SLA News Division’s Current News Library Job Openings.
Addenda: My mentee told me I advised: “If the right job presents itself and requires you to pay to go, you’ll know when paying your own way is the right choice.”
The radio station I listen to at work asked "What things should you not say in a job interview?" during their afternoon game. The caller said things like admitting that you stole from your last job, saying you want to steal from them, and insulting the people running the interview.
