SLA Proposes Change to Membership Prices

The Special Libraries Association proposes to base membership fees on income, charging $99 for those members who make $35,000 or less and $160 for those making more than $35,000.

SLA will hold an online election between September 15 and October 7.

While I think having membership fees on a sliding scale is a good idea, I’m not sure that I agree with the method because it seems like it should account for regional economic differences instead of just basing it on salaries.

From an entirely self-serving perspective, I say: huzzah!

As for regional differences … I think the membership coordinator would have difficulties in this regard. Also, would region-based dues be fair in terms of urban/suburban or rural areas within a region (say, greater Boston MSA versus western MA)?
