Congratulations and Best Wishes, Wendy and Joey!
/The wedding/ of my little corner of the blogosphere happens in just a few hours. I’m very excited for my friend Wendy and her, uh,–can I just say husband?–Joey. They met at the first BloggerCon at Harvard in October 2003, became fast friends, and, well, the rest is history. (See? For some people, blogging really does do wonderful things!) They’re a very happy couple who is well-suited to be together; and, I sincerely wish them all the best.
I’ve read many of their blogs posts about their relationship as it has developed over the last almost two years–bringing them some kind of blogosphere stardom as people tuned in just for the romance. I’ve enjoyed reading the wedlog (that’s not a typo; that’s a wedding blog) they put together about a year ago. I really like some of the newest posts explaining the various traditions we’ll see in their wedding this evening. Joey’s heritage is Filipino and Christian. Wendy’s roots are American and Jewish. The ceremony is going to introduce us to selected aspects of their cultures.
I’ve known all week that I wanted to write a special post for them today and have been pondering what to say in it. I still can’t think of the right, elegant words or even a sappy quote about the blessing of love for their marriage. Maybe I should reuse the words from another friend’s wedding invitation:
"When two people are at one in their inmost hearts, they shatter even the strength of iron or bronze. And when two people understand each other in their inmost hearts, their words are sweet and strong, like the fragrance of orchids.”
–I Ching
Wendy and Joey, may all the joys of love and marriage be yours.
Addenda 9/25: The wedding was awesome! Joey and Wendy seemed so relaxed and happy together.
AKMA’s homily was really funny–it made me realize in the tradition I was raised, we don’t laugh enough at weddings. His report includes some photos.
Rachel marvelously blended aspects of the Jewish and Filipino wedding traditions together during the service. It was great to meet her and to spend time once again with her husband, Ethan, who’s a very well-respected blogger among the Berkman group because of his work with bacon Africa. He so far only has a pre-wedding post. (I wonder if he was able to get online …) I obeyed Wendy’s wishes and left my computer at home. (All that practice blogging while dancing for nothing!)
Update: Ethan recounts the wedding and shares a number of images. (All I can say about the Internet rumor of my dancing abilities is see for yourself …)
When I learned I’d be invited to the wedding, I thought “Oh! I should buy a digital camera before then.” As I sat down for the ceremony yesterday, I realized I still hadn’t done that. Oh, well. I might scan and post photos later. Much later.
I’ve been following the wedding planning and everything for the big event for so long, I think it’s going to take me a few days to not think of it as something in the future. It’s now just a fabulous memory.
Congratulations and all the best, you two!
9/26: I am scouting for more coverage of the wedding.
Rachel has wonderful notes detailing the ceremony and her work as rabbi for the couple. She also posted the service in .pdf form.
9/27: The liturgy and program are now on the wedlog.
