Live IRC Chat: Handbook for Bloggers and Cyber-Dissidents, Tues. (9/27), 11 am EST
"Do you have questions about, criticisms of, or reactions to the Reporters Without Borders Handbook for Bloggers and Cyber-Dissidents? Global Voices will be hosting a live online chat to discuss the book on Tuesday September 27th at 11:00amNewYork /15:00GMT /18:00Cairo /23:00Beijing."
The chat will be on the channel globalvoices on irc.freenode.net.
Bob has more about the guide.
Addenda: I’m on the IRC channel. Ethanz said he’d post a transcript later–the chat is public.
Some of the key points that have come up so far:
- Julien_Pain: first you have to teach them how to create their blog, and then how to remain anonymous
DeborahFinn: It’s good to build the privacy-protection skills in from the beginning with a new blogger - RMacK: … i think bloggers who dont need to be anonymous should really be encouraged to make their identities clear if they want to be credible
- DeborahFinn: (On IRC, you can’t tell who is typing with his/her nose)
Since Ethanz already announced the chat will be posted publicly, I’m using people’s names. About 36 people from around the world–China, the Middle East, Europe–participated in the chat. I’m now in a meeting with some of the folks who were on chat. It’s cool to see them in person after being online with them.
Deborah Elizabeth Finn shares her notes and thoughts of the chat.
When I saw Ethanz at a presentation this afternoon, he remarked how quiet I was on IRC for this chat. There are times when I speak, but there are more times when I just sit back and take in the knowledge and wisdom surrounding me.
9/28: I should have mentioned that I heard Julien Pain speak at the Berkman Center in July.
