Worldwide Shortage of Librarians?
Whether or not there’s a shortage of librarians is up to debate. This piece from the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) asserts there is, as well as mentioning necessary skills and the changing workplace. It caused a bit of a stir when someone shared the link on a discussion list a few days ago. Some job seekers who have been on the market for a while might tell you they don’t see evidence of a shortage of librarians. Others think low-paying and/or entry-level positions going unfilled make it seem like there’s a shortage. Since a number of librarians and information scientists are on their second or third career, what does that do for the number who seem like they’re nearing retirement age? How does our average age compare with that of other fields? Are the numbers skewed a bit because of the baby boom generation? Will better paying jobs with more desireable benefits alleviate a shortage?
In news librarianship, especially because of job cuts and hiring freezes related to the poor economy, it seems like competition for positions is tough. During a period of a few months within the last two or three years, there were no new job postings circulating among a professional association for news librarians. It seems like in our field, a shortage of positions is a more critical problem than a shortage of information professionals.

I am a graduate of A.B. Library Science, after my graduation I only rested for 2 weeks then the job was there… seeking for Library and Information Science graduate is very much difficult to find. I graduated last June 2003 and in our course we are only two who march in the stage after graduation a lot of school who are in need of Library and Information Science graduate yet the main problem is the license. You need to have a license before you can have a better salary. The problem now is that the Licesure Examination for Librarians is getting harder and harder each year because informations is keep on updating. When we tooke the board exam last November 3 & 4 of this year, a lot of informations and question that we haven’t meet yet ever since. Even if we did have a review before taking the board.
It is vewry difficult to become a Librarian, that is why being a librarian is more than a librarian.
