Legal Advice to CILIP: British and Welsh Library Users’ Privacy May Be Compromised for Security or Police Investigations

I occasionally write about the USA PATRIOT ACT’s impact on libraries. Here’s some information from the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP), a large library/librarian/information scientist professional association in Britain, about privacy and library users’ records. CILIP asked for some legal advice after some investigations involving library records happened at member libraries. A barrister outlined how the police and security services can use various acts to gain access to library records.
