Academic Blogging: Risky or a New Form of Communication from the Ivory Tower?
Bill Ives writes about this New York Sun article on the perils of blogging in academia. It begins with the story of Daniel Drezner, a celebrated blogger and professor who didn’t get tenure this year, and goes on to explore the issues surrounding professors blogging. Bill pulls out a great quote that summarizes the situation. George Washington University professor Henry Farrell, who blogs at Crooked Timber, wrote in response to a Chronicle of Higher Education piece about blogging and job seeking:
"To dismiss blogging as a bad idea altogether is to make an enormous mistake. For these academics, blogging isn’t a hobby; it’s an integral part of their scholarly identity. They may very well be the wave of the future."
I particularly like the idea of professors using the medium to translate research into something anyone can understand. I try to do that with this blog and the topic of news librarianship.
