Request for Book on Communism Leads to Federal Agents’ Visit
I’m not sure which part of this news article is creepier: that a student requesting a copy of Mao Tse-Tung’s "The Little Red Book” gets a surprise visit from Homeland Security agents or that things professors ask us to read in college could haunt us in later years.
Addenda 1/1/06: A follow-up newstory claims the student lied about the visit of federal agents. It seems to have never happened. (Thanks for the link, Amy!)
1/3/06: I’ve noticed several follow-up links to this story, including one at LISNews mentioning a similar situation at another university that also seems to be untrue.
1/11/06: Jessamyn has more on the falsehoods, including some good links.

The federal visit. Since the book should be studied in all high schools as part of civics classes it’s pretty strange that they would pay so much attention to it. No studying = more likely to be taken in by it later in life and more ignorant of the advantages of the democratic approach to things. Might be a nice one to cover after Animal Farm.
