Bringing People Together
As I was introducing people to each other at the contradance Thursday night–some of whom had been dancing together for months without ever introducing themselves or really chatting–someone joked that I’m like a human network router. Because my network has grown substantially in the last few years and I know people with similar interests in the various circles I spin in, sometimes, I do try to do things to bump people together. (I’m not a romantic matchmaker. Most of this routing has to do with people’s professions.)
From Weekend America, I learned of a great experiment by artist Marc Horowitz to bring people together. It started when he wrote "dinner w/ Marc" and his phone number on a whiteboard used in a Crate & Barrel catalog. He received thousands of calls because of that ad and began traveling around the country to have dinner with people. Some of the dinners he’s done with several people from one area. The segment talks about some of the connections people make at the dinners and the power of bringing people together.
