Two Massachusetts Newspapers Reveal Confidential Subscriber Information by Mistake

"Confidential credit and bank card account information of Boston Globe and Worcester Telegram & Gazette subscribers who pay for their home delivery subscriptions by credit card was recently inadvertently disclosed on the back of slips used to label bundles of the Worcester Sunday Telegram."

appears on the top of The Boston Globe’s Web site. BusinessWeek summarizes the mistake. I noticed an article on the front page of the Globe a few days ago. The Globe also published a letter. Today, they have information about protecting against identity theft. As embarrassing as this is for both papers, I would have thought the Globe would keep the articles linked from a prominent place so subscribers could find out what happened. Through Google News, I found a statement from the Massachusetts attorney general advising consumers about what to do.

Customers can search to find out if their privacy was compromised. The Globe provides steps to take and information about protecting accounts to people whose account information was released. They claim they are sending a letter to affected subscribers.
