Connecticut Library Group Wins Right to Identify Self in USA Patriot Act Investigation

Remember the news that a New England library was subpeoned as part of an anti-terrorism investigation under the USA Patriot Act, but no one could say who received the request for information? The New York Times has an update.

"After fighting ferociously for months, federal prosecutors relented yesterday and agreed to allow [the Library Connection of Windsor, Connecticut] to identify itself as the recipient of a secret F.B.I. demand for records in a counterterrorism investigation."

"Kevin J. O’Connor, the United States attorney in Connecticut, said yesterday that the government decided drop its case largely because the Patriot Act’s secrecy provisions concerning national security subpoenas were changed to give the Federal Bureau of Investigation discretion in allowing recipients to identify themselves."
